An Evening Over Violence: For Our Families

Our commitment to our vision of a world without violence is undeniable.

On Thursday, November 7, 2019 we held our Evening Over Violence event; we came together in Downtown Los Angeles to connect and be re-inspired by our activism over the past 48 years.

In a tropical deco design building in LA's fashion district at DAMA restaurant, it was a night filled with celebration, leaving all of us at POV and our guests recharged. We came together to create a space to build community and celebrate the transformative work we do and our commitment to violence prevention.

MEDIA OVER VIOLENCE HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Netflix’s Unbelievable and series creators Susannah Grant and Sarah Timberman

Inspired by true events, Unbelievable tells the story of a young woman who is accused of lying about being raped, and two female detectives who investigate similar attacks. Over seven episodes, the show takes time to explore and explain all the ramifications that accompany sexual assault in a raw and honest portrayal. It is rare to have a story told in a way that illustrates what happens when rape survivors are not believed. The viewer gets a sense of what trauma does to a memory, what trauma does to the brain, what trauma does to the body, and what trauma does to relationships. Unbelievable is able to illustrate the complexities of sexual trauma and the myriad of ways it impacts individuals on their journey to achieve justice.

Sarah Timberman is the Executive Producer of Unbelievable. She is the producer several other critically acclaimed and long running television shows and heads Timberman/Beverly Productions Center with her partner Carl Beverly. Susannah Grant is the Showrunner and Executive Producer of Unbelievable. She is an Academy Award®-nominated writer, producer and director whose resume includes film, television and streaming platforms.

JOURNALISM OVER VIOLENCE HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Los Angeles Times journalists Nicole Santa Cruz and Iris Lee

In September 2019, Nicole Santa Cruz and Iris Lee published an eye-opening domestic violence investigation as part of The Homicide Report series, The Times’ effort to tell the story of every homicide victim in Los Angeles County. They wrote and reported: “As homicides drop in L.A., more women are being killed — often by intimate partners.” This piece sought to bring a gender-based violence focus to the analysis of gun violence in LA County.

Nicole Santa Cruz writes the Homicide Report for the Los Angeles Times. Iris Lee is a data journalist on the Los Angeles Times Data Desk.

Special Recognition: Patti's 75th Birthday

This year POV’s Executive Director Patti Giggans’ celebrated her milestone 75th birthday at the same time as our Evening Over Violence. For more than 40 years, Patti has been an activist, challenging patriarchal systems and breaking down barriers. And for 34 years, she has led POV through incredible expansion and growth, and positioned us as one of the leading sexual assault, domestic violence and youth violence prevention agencies in the nation.

We used this special celebration as an opportunity to help support and launch our newest initiative: Building A Brave Space. This campaign will help Peace Over Violence move in 2020 and expand services for children, youth and families–and continue to bravely, fiercely, and diligently meet the ever-changing needs of our community.
