Summary
Peace Over Violence is seeking a dynamic Violence Prevention Educator to work in the LA and West San Gabriel valley community with youth, young adults, and adult allies to educate on primary prevention strategies, with the goal of preventing and reducing instances of sexual assault, dating violence, gender‐ based, harassment, intimate partner stalking and violence in the community. The Violence Prevention Educator will provide educational programs on consent, healthy relationships, and healthy sexuality to youth and community in a variety of setting utilizing Peace Over Violence In Touch With Teens and other prevention division curriculums. This position will facilitate engaging, trauma informed training sessions that empower participants, particularly youth, girls, LGBTQ individuals and marginalized groups. This position will collaborate with community partners to expand program reach and contribute to a culture of safety, respect and equality.
Responsibilities:
Implement prevention education to middle and high school students, youth and the general public, with a special focus on engaging youth and schools. Prevention education program topics include Healthy Relationships, Dating violence, Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, Bullying, Gender Stereotypes, Boundaries & Consent, personal security awareness and empowerment self‐defense.
Maintain a working relationship with community partners, school professionals in the East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights area to facilitate collaboration of Peace Over Violence Prevention programming
Co‐facilitate youth volunteer meetings, STOP (Student Together Organizing Peace, and Youth
Summer Institute Training
Participate in tabling and outreach events in the LA and WSGV community
Work as part of the LA County Youth Development and Consolidated Youth project and ensure program deliverables are tracked and met.
Responsible for organizing programs and youth activities
Work with POV’s Violence Prevention team to expand prevention efforts
Build and maintain relationships with teachers, administrators at partner schools, college campuses and other social‐justice and social‐service agencies
Assist in developing leadership through the Youth Over Violence Institute and Internship program, including preparation and facilitation
Records and reports on school and community outcomes and appropriate paperwork
Establishes and maintains effective and professional working relationships with emphasis
Administrative / Other Duties:
Attend scheduled Prevention meetings relevant to specific grants and/or projects
Adhere to necessary grant requirements for statistical tracking and program evaluation
Collect, record, and analyze agency services, data, and activity
Develop, update, and/or revise outreach and prevention materials, as necessary
Attend in‐services, staff meeting, annual agency functions, and other agency meetings, as necessary
Provide crisis counseling, support, and resources to clients, as needed
Maintain accurate time sheets, sign in sheets, and relevant agency paperwork
And other duties as needed
Qualifications:
Experience in providing Trauma informed services
Complete Peace Over Violence's Violence Prevention Specialist Training, or equivalent
Complete Peace Over Violence's Counselor Advocate Training, or equivalent
In‐depth knowledge of domestic violence, teen dating violence, sexual assault, child sexual assault, violence prevention approaches, and other intersecting issues
Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time
Good social, organizational and diplomacy skills
Ability to demonstrate initiative and professionalism; ability to work independently and maintain workload
Ability to work with groups, individuals, volunteers, and staff in a non‐judgmental manner
Ability to get along well with a diverse group of people as a team member and to feel comfortable working with diverse communities
Ability to write and speak clearly and accurately, with confidence
Must be proficient and comfortable around computers and other forms of technology
Flexible schedule: capacity to work some weekends and/or evenings
Must have a valid California driver's license and/or reliable public transportation skills
Bilingual (Spanish) language skills are preferred
Must be comfortable teaching movement, speaking in front of groups and be self‐motivated.
Should be able to tackle difficult subjects with a sense of humor, flexibility, and confidence. As it is possible, applicants may help facilitate students in their understanding of self and others;
Should be comfortable facilitating group discussions and attentive to potential dynamics in an emotionally charged setting. As individuals possess different learning styles, flexibility in presenting the material appropriately is essential.
